UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.; - Senior Lauren McCarthy (Danbury, Conn.) and junior Denisa Zobeideh (Weston, Fla.) earned their second doubles win of the weekend today as the Penn State women's tennis team (4-12, 0-4 Big Ten) dropped a 7-0 decision to No. 56 Minnesota.

Opening the match with doubles play, Minnesota won on two of three courts to take a 1-0 lead. The Golden Gophers won all six singles matches.

McCarthy and Zobeideh gave Penn State an early edge as they handed Tijana Koprivica and Jackie Sperling an 8-2 loss on the No. 2 court. Minnesota's Alessandra Ferrazzi and Alexa Palen tied the doubles score as they followed with an 8-4 win over freshman Amy Simidian (Carlstadt, N.J.) and Sarah Lotto (Toronto, Ontario) in first singles.

Following in third singles, the sophomore duo of Michaela Stracar (Jericho, N.Y.) and Maria Prishlyak (Kiev, Ukraine) fell to Doron Muravnik and Mariana Spilca, 8-2, securing the doubles point for the Golden Gophers.

With Minnesota leading 1-0, the match moved into singles play. Lotto dropped a 6-1, 6-3 decision to Magdalena Wiecha on the No. 6 court, following a Simidian loss to Ferrazzi in first singles, 6-1, 6-3.

Palen clinched the match victory for the Gophers as she put them ahead 4-0 with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Prishlyak on the No. 3 court, 6-2, 6-1. Following in fifth singles, freshman Sarah Henderson (Auckland, New Zealand) hung around with Muravnik in the first set, but eventually fell 7-5, 6-1.

In the final match of the day, Zobeideh fell to Sperling in the first set of No. 4 singles, 6-4, but responded with a 6-7(7) victory in the second. Sperling edged Zobeideh in the tiebreaker, 10-8, to complete the Minnesota doubles sweep.

Next weekend, the Nittany Lions travel to Michgan to take on the Wolverines in Ann Arbor on Saturday, April 10 at noon and to East Lansing on Sunday, April 11 to face Michigan State at 10 a.m. Penn State is on the road again the following weekend at Indiana on Saturday, April 17 at 11 a.m., then at Illinois the next day at noon.
