Softball's Quest for 30-Win Season Halted by Rain at Indiana

May 15, 2010

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The Penn State Nittany Lions were in search of their 30th win of the 2010 season and led Indiana, 2-0, through two and a half innings, but steady rain cancelled the game. Penn State ends its regular season with a 29-22 record.

Penn State 29-22, 8-11 Big Ten) got on the board first for the second time in as many days when Lauren Rossi (Yardley, Pa.) walked and Lauren Yao (Los Angeles, Calif.) knocked a single to left with one out. After a line out by Desi Giordano (West Caldwell, N.J.), Danee Collett sent a liner up the middle that tipped off the glove of IU second baseman Samantha Berenter, scoring Rossi from second for a one-run lead.

In the third inning, Cassidy Bell (Bakersfield, Calif.) led off with a double to left-center field and Ashley Griffith (Mt. Laurel, N.J.) walked. A Kailyn Johnson (Yorba Linda, Calif.) found its way into left field to load the bases. Jackie Hill (San Jose, Calif.) lifted a fly ball to right field and Bell tagged up, avoiding the tag, to score the game's second run.

Indiana managed to get runners on first and third with two outs in the bottom of the third but the already increasing rain turned heavier, postponing the game. The game, which was delayed 25 minutes by rain during pregame warm-ups and Indiana's Senior Day ceremony, was eventually called after a 90-minute rain delay.

Penn State was in search of its 11th 30-win season and ninth under head coach Robin Petrini. The 29 wins are a 10-win improvement over the 2009 campaign and gave Petrini a total of 424 in her 14-year career at the helm of the Nittany Lion softball program. Petrini is the all-time leader in wins in school history.
