Complete Second-Round Results in PDF Format
New Haven, Conn. - Senior Kevin Foley (Somerville, N.J) fired a consecutive 3-under par 67, to jump to the second-place position of the 2010 NCAA East Regional leaderboard. Foley led the Nittany Lions to yet another fantastic day of golf as the team sits in third place at even-par 560, just five strokes back of first-place pair Texas and Kent State. Penn State will begin the third and final round of the qualifying tournament carding rounds of 277-283 (560).
"Our play through the first eight holes was outstanding," said head coach Greg Nye. "We had a few bumps at the difficult 9 and 10 holes of Yale that leveled out to the finish. Overall we competed well."
Leading the Nittany Lions, Foley rides the coattail of tournament leader Rhys Enoch of East Tennessee State, sitting just one stroke back of Enoch's 7-under par (133) score. Foley's two-day 6-under par 134 (67-67) performance has earned him fantastic position heading into the final 18 holes, scheduled to be completed tomorrow afternoon.
"Kevin and T.J. have just been tremendous," said Nye. "They have both been playing well through the later part of this year."
Senior T.J. Howe (Osceola, Pa.) also aided the Nittany Lions this afternoon with a second-round 68, a one-stroke improvement from his previous-day score of 69. Howe enters the final round tied for sixth at 3-under par 137. Freshman Ernesto Marin (Miami, Fla.) concluded play tied for 34th with rounds of 69-74 (143, +3). Junior Tommy McDonagh (East Norwalk, Conn.) finished the second round with a 76, posting a 72-76, 8-over par (148) total. Rounding out for the Penn State lineup was senior Jim Markovitz (Bridgeville, Pa.) who posted a two-round 10-over par 150 total with rounds of 76-74. Markovitz will enter the final round tied for 62nd.
The final round of the East Regional tournament will pick-up tomorrow morning at 7:50 a.m., with the Nittany Lions starting at 8:40 a.m. Tomorrow marks the final chance for the 14 teams to fight for top-5 positions in order to advance to the NCAA Championships, June 1-6.
