UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - A trio of Nittany Lion women's volleyball alums are making an impact on the U.S. Women's National Team at the IX Women's Pan Am Cup being held in the neighboring Mexico towns of Tijuana and Rosarita. Alisha Glass (Leland, Mich.), Christa Harmotto (Aliquippa, Pa.) and Megan Hodge (Durham, N.C.), who helped the U.S. Women to a 3-0 start in the tournament, guided Team USA to a perfect 5-0 record in Pool B play with two more victories.
On June 21, the U.S. Women took on Costa Rica and secured a convincing 3-0 (25-11, 25-10, 25-2) victory. Harmotto, who started the second and third sets at middle blocker, posted two blocks and one kill for three points. Glass was the starting setter and added an ace.
The following night, Team USA defeated Mexico in three sets (25-13, 25-16, 25-15). Hodge, who had missed the matches against Trinidad & Tobago and Costa Rica to travel to UCLA to accept as co-recipient the Honda-Broderick Cup as the top collegiate female athlete for 2009-10, led the U.S. Women with 10 kills and two aces for 12 points. Glass totaled 23 running sets on 56 attempts as the U.S. converted 45.7 percent of its kill attempts with a .337 hitting efficiency. Head coach Hugh McCutcheon started Hodge at outside hitter and Glass at setter.
As the only undefeated team in Pool B, Team USA earned a berth in the semifinals, which begin on June 25.
Glass, Harmotto and Hodge were four-year members of the Penn State women's volleyball team under head coach Russ Rose. Harmotto aided the Nittany Lions in back-to-back NCAA National Championships in 2007 and 2008, while Hodge and Glass closed out their Nittany Lion careers guiding PSU to an unprecedented third straight national title in 2009.
