Nittany Lion Baseball Well-Represented in Collegiate Summer Leagues

June 25, 2010

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Following an up-and-down 2010 season, numerous Penn State baseball players remain active in collegiate summer leagues around the country. In total, 14 Nittany Lions are making their impact in nine different leagues as they prepare for the 2011 season.

Three Lions are playing in the Northwoods League, with both catcher Bobby Jacobs (West Chester, Pa.) and third baseman Jordan Steranka (Pittsburgh, Pa.) on the Mankato Moondogs. Steranka has impressed thus far, hitting .371 to lead the squad in a team-high 89 at-bats. He also has a home run and team-high eight RBI. In total, he already has 11 extra-base hits, by far the most on the squad.

Meanwhile, outfielder Sean Deegan (Readington, N.J.) is also in the league and is currently the leading hitter for the Battle Creek Bombers. He is batting .308 with eight doubles, two triples, six RBI and a team-leading nine stolen bases. By comparison, no other Battle Creek player is hitting over .273.

Penn State is represented with a pair in the Texas Collegiate League, Great Lakes League and Valley League. High school teammates Steve Snyder (West Chester, Pa.) and Neal Herring (West Chester, Pa.) reunited once again, this time for the Valley League's Luray Wranglers in Virginia.

Outfielder Mario Eramo (Houston, Texas) is Penn State's lone representative in the New England Collegiate League, suiting up for the Vermont Mountaineers, who have appeared in four of the last five NECBL Finals. Eramo did hit his first home run of the summer on June 13 in a 9-6 win over Danbury.

Also in action are pitcher Mike Pierce with the Carolina Stingers (Southern Collegiate League), shortstop Luis Montesinos with the Orlando Mavericks (Florida Collegiate League), first baseman Joey DeBernardis with the DeKalb County Liners (Prospect League) and shortstop Michael Glantz with the Home Plate Chukars (Sunbelt League).
