NSCAA Poll (8/24) • Penn State Invitational

KANSAS CITY, Kan. - The Nittany Lion women's soccer team (1-0-0) moved up one spot to 12th in the most recent National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) poll released on Tuesday.

A day after being ranked 11th by Soccer America, Penn State was voted 12th in the country by the NSCAA after a 13th-place preseason ranking. The Nittany Lions are coming off a 2-1 overtime win at West Virginia, the team's first since 2003.

North Carolina tops the poll for the second straight week followed by Stanford, UCLA, Notre Dame and Penn State's Sept. 12 opponent Portland.

Penn State takes on No. 15 Virginia, who moved up two spots after a dominating 2-0-0 start to its season, on Friday at 7:30 p.m. on Jeffrey Field. Virginia downed Liberty, 4-0, before throttling Colgate, 6-0. The Cavaliers out-shot their opponents 46-1 collectively this weekend.

The game against Virginia is being promoted to draw the largest women's soccer crowd to Jeffrey Field in its history. The goal is to have 4,500 on hand to see two of the region's historically best teams in the Nittany Lions and Cavaliers. The meeting will be the third in the intensifying rivalry in the past 12 months, which saw the two squads split their meetings in 2009. All soccer games at Jeffrey Field are free of charge as is parking.
