DUPONT, Wash. - Three Nittany Lions took the links at Chambers Bay Monday morning at the 2010 U.S. Amateur Championship. Senior redshirt Tommy McDonagh, sophomore Ernesto Marin, and freshman Michael Miller all represented Penn State on the prestigious links.
Tommy McDonagh (Norwalk, Conn.) finished his round tying for 24. McDonagh shot par with a 71, placing him in promising position for the second and final round before the 64 cut. Miller (Brewster, N.Y.), also in great position on the leaderboard posted a 73, 1-over par to finish tied for 41. Marin (Miami, Fla.) finished tied at No. 283 with a 14-over par, 85.
The USGA Amateur Championship competitors competed on either The Home Course or the Chambers Bay Golf Course for the first round of stroke play. The field will compete in two rounds of stroke play for the top 64 spots in order to compete in match play for the title.
Round two begins today, Aug., 24, at both courses and will again be in the stroke-play format. After today's round the low 64 scores will be announced and advance to head-to-head challenge. McDonagh will take on The Home Course off the No. 10 tee at 1:20 p.m. Miller takes the links at Chambers Bay off the No. 1 tee at 9:05 a.m. Marin will join McDonagh at The Home Course off of No. 1 at 8:15 a.m.
