UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Penn State field hockey sophomore Kelsey Amy (Sweet Valley, Pa.) has been named Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week, as announced by the conference office on Monday. Amy accounted for half of the Lions' offensive outburst during Friday's 4-0 season-opening win over No. 16 Old Dominion.
Amy enjoyed a strong finish to 2009, which has continued into her sophomore campaign. She scored two goals against the Monarchs to tie a career-high, previously set on two occasions last season.
Both goals came off penalty corners - one in each half, at 26:14 and 70:00. The Nittany Lions were awarded a corner as time expired in regulation, allowing Amy to double her scoring output.
Amy now has 10 goals in her last 12 games dating back to last season, this after going pointless in the first 10 games of her career.
It also marked the second straight year that a Nittany Lion scored two goals in the home-opener. Redshirt sophomore Hannah Allison (Mifflinburg, Pa.) had a pair against Lock Haven last season.
The offensive player of the week honor marks Penn State's first since Allison Scola earned the honors on Oct. 13, 2008.
The No. 18 Nittany Lions play their third straight ranked foe and second consecutive top-five squad when they travel to Connecticut on Friday to face the No. 5 Huskies. Gametime is set for 5 p.m.
