Sept. 10, 2010

Box Score

PORTLAND, Ore. - An early goal by Washington set the tone as Penn State could never recover in a 2-1 loss at Merlo Field Friday afternoon. Maya Hayes (West Orange, N.J.) tallied her first career goal in the 83rd minute.

Hayes became the third Nittany Lion freshman to score this season when Christine Nairn (Arnold, Md.) slotted a pass to her in the penalty area and her shot from 12 yards deflected in to make it a 2-1 game in the 83rd minute. Penn State (1-4-1) forced the pressure in the remaining minutes, but couldn't tack on the equalizer, falling for the fourth straight time. Nairn had a header go just wide in the 88th minute and another shot in the 90th go off the crossbar, sealing PSU's fate.

The Huskies (4-1-1) began in fine form scoring on the second shot of the match when Jane Mitchell put away a Kelli Stewart assist just 9:19 into the game.

PSU's best chance of the first half came when Danielle Toney (Northville, Mich.) took a pass inside the penalty area and nearly slotted the shot home, but UW `keeper Kari Davidson (four saves) was up to the task.

Washington immediately responded when Kate Deines took a pass off a Kendyl Pele free kick and sent a shot into the upper right corner of the net for a two-goal advantage in the 30th minute.

Tani Costa (Honolulu, Hawaii) had an excellent chance to cut into the lead at the halftime buzzer, but her last-second shot was saved by Davidson.

After the intermission, the two teams played some fast-paced back and forth soccer seeing multiple scoring chances of each end. Toney's shot just 60 seconds into the frame that just went high of net nearly put PSU on the board. Nairn had a pair of shots from distance, one in the 53rd and another in the 67th.

Washington fired right back with a chance of its own when Annie Sittauer's shot was saved by Tribbett (two saves). From there, PSU held much of the possession, frustrating the Huskies into numerous fouls and even a yellow card to Faustine Dufka, who was dubbed in just seconds earlier in the 73rd minute.

Penn State finishes its stay in Oregon with a 4:30 p.m. ET match up against No. 4 Portland. Live stats as well as free streaming video are available through PortlandPilots.com powered by Stretch Internet.
