UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.; September 27, 2010 - Sophomore Petra Januskova (Ottawa, Canada) is set to play in the All-American Qualifiers in Pacific Palisades, Calif. beginning Mon., Oct. 4 This marks the first time in Januskova's career that she will play in the All-American Qualifiers.
Januskova will be part of the 64-player qualifying round. During the qualifying stage, she will have several ways to advance into the main draw. A player can win three rounds in qualifying play, earn one of 28 at-large selections or be in the top three in their respective region.
Januskova is coming off a consolation tournament victory at the Racquet Club Collegiate Invitational in Midland, Texas. Januskova defeated the tournament's top seed, Alexandra Kichoutkin of Tulsa, 6-3, 6-4, to win the consolation bracket.
In her first season as a Nittany Lion, Januskova went 8-7 in singles play and was ranked as high as No. 66 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Rankings. She had several key wins throughout the year, including victories against No. 27 Pichittra Thongdash of Boise State and No. 42 Michaela Kissell of Marshall. Januskova was honored for her solid play as a freshman when she was named the ITA Atlantic Region Freshman of the Year.
Januskova is the 81st-ranked player in the preseason ITA Rankings. This marks the first time a Nittany Lion was named to the preseason Top 100 since Kelly Erven in 1989.
