UNIVERSITY PARK, PA. - Senior Julia Trogele (Devon, Pa.) and redshirt sophomore Mia Nickson (Ashburn, Va.) have been selected as the 2010-11 captains for the Penn State Lady Lions, it was announced today by head coach Coquese Washington.
"The leadership has been tremendous," Washington said of her captains. "Our captains have definitely taken our leadership to a whole new level this spring and this summer. They are extremely accountable and responsible and they have held our team to a high standard in the off-season, which is critical."
Trogele, the team's lone senior, led the team and was 11th in the Big Ten in rebounding (6.2) a year ago. The guard/forward also accounted for 6.5 points per game. Trogele continued to be solid from the free throw line, finishing fifth in the Big Ten in free throw percentage (.827). She is fifth in Penn State history with an .813 effort from the charity stripe. The native of Devon, Pa. is also 18th on the Lady Lion rebounding average charts with a 5.7 mark.
Nickson will take the floor for the blue & white for the first time this year after sitting out last season due to NCAA transfer rules. Despite not being able to play for the Lady Lions last season, the redshirt sophomore forward was selected as the co-recipient of the Tom Caldwell "Unsung Hero" Award. At Boston College, Nickson averaged 1.6 points and 2.0 rebounds in 28 appearances in her freshman year.
