UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Penn State baseball sophomore Luis Montesinos (Miami, Fla.) and juniors Sean Deegan (Readington, N.J.) and Jordan Steranka (Pittsburgh, Pa.) have been ranked among their respective summer league's top prospects, as recently unveiled by Perfect Game Crosschecker - the World's Largest Baseball Scouting Service. Through personal observation, contact with scouts and input from league managers, the publication focuses on those players who have the greatest chance to succeed at the next level.
Two leagues - the Cape Code and Northwoods Leagues - were deemed Tier One. Both Steranka and Deegan participated in the Northwoods League this past summer with the Mankato Moondogs and Battle Creek Bombers, respectively. Penn State's starting third baseman, Steranka hit .290 with three home runs and a team-leading 33 RBI in 68 games for the Moondogs. He was tabbed the league's No. 18 prospect while Deegan, an outfield, came in at No. 42.
Steranka by far and away led his squad in games played (68) and at-bats (262) while racking up 17 doubles and three triples. Deegan impressed with the Bombers, hitting .299 with a team-leading 15 stolen bases and 73 runs scored along with a home run and 17 doubles.
Four other Big Ten players were ranked among the top 50 of the Northwoods League: Brad Schreiber (8) of Purdue, Brad Davis (32) and Josh Parr (38) of Illinois and Patrick Biondi (48) of Michigan.
A shortstop, Montesinos excelled for the Orlando Mavericks of the Florida Collegiate League, hitting .291 with a home run and seven RBI. He was recognized as the league's 25th ranked prospect.
Steranka and Montesinos both participated in their league's mid-season All-Star games as well.
