Box Score

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The No. 16 Penn State women's soccer team dropped its second straight match in a 1-0 loss to Yale at windy and rainy Reese Stadium.

PSU got off to a slow start offensively, but turned a 15th-minute goal kick into a quick scoring opportunity when Danielle Toney (Northville, Mich.) streaked down the right wing and had a one-on-one opportunity on net. Her far-post shot hit the post, keeping the Nittany Lions off the scoreboard.

Penn State kept possession for much of the first half and after a lull in the offense midway through the stanza, nearly put a few chances away. Lexi Marton (Aurora, Ontario) fed Toney on a through ball in the 43rd minute giving Toney another breakaway opportunity, but goalkeeper Ayana Sumiyasu (four saves) was able to get a hand to it and knock it wide.

Moments later, Julie Hubbard (Waverly, Pa.) rocket a shot that went just high of frame. Penn State ended the half with a 4-3 edge in shots and a 2-0 advantage in corners.

The Nittany Lions got off to a quick start in the second half as Christine Nairn (Arnold, Md.) and Tani Costa (Honolulu, Hawaii) looked to jump start the offense. Nairn sent a rocket of a shot from 20 yards out just high in the 55th minute, while Costa responded a minute later with a close-range chance that was saved by Sumiyasu.

Despite the constant pressure by Penn State, Yale's first shot of the second half came from Becky Brown and happened to be the game-winner when the senior slipped a ball past Krissy Tribbett (Centennial, Colo.) for a 1-0 lead in the 62nd minute. The goal was assisted by Enma Mullo.

PSU got back on the offensive with multiple chances on net including a Maya Hayes chance in the 77th minute that was saved by Sumiyasu. Unfortunately for Penn State, it wasn't enough as the Nittany Lions wouldn't solve the stingy Bulldog defense and left Reese Stadium with the loss.

Penn State out-shot Yale 14-6 for the game, which included a 10-3 edge in the second half. PSU has four corner kicks to Yale's one, while the Bulldogs made four saves.

The Nittany Lions return to action on Sunday as they wrap up their two-game Connecticut road trip with a 1:00 p.m. match up at UConn, 2-1 double-overtime winners against Illinois today.
