Pryishlyak, Roth lead Women's Tennis in Hokie Fall Invitational

BLACKSBURG, Va.; October 1, 2010 - The Penn State women's tennis team won two doubles matches and three singles matches on the opening day of the Hokie Fall Invitational.

Junior Maria Prishlyak (Kiev, Ukraine) won her first round match in Flight C singles against Ivana Tomaic of Radford, 6-1, 6-2. Fellow junior Kristen Roth (Ardmore, Pa.) defeated Tamara Hill of Davidson 6-2, 1-6, 6-3 in the Flight F bracket. Prishlyak came up short in the second round against Kelly Tidwell of Richmond, 6-4, 6-4. Roth was defeated in the second round of play by Annisha Domenech of Liberty 6-3, 6-2.

In doubles play, Fernanda Perrotta (Buenos Aires, Argentina) and Roth defeated Katherine Bulling and Michelle Nguyen of James Madison , 8-6, in Flight B doubles. Sarah Henderson (Bloomington, Ind.) and Prishlyak defeated Jessie Boda and Annisa Domenech of Liberty, 8-2, in the Flight C bracket.

In Flight A singles, Carmen Sandor (Toronto, Canada) lost 6-2, 6-2 by Kelly Holtzhausen of East Tennessee State. Marie-Frederique Bedard (Montreal, Canada) was bested by Giovanna Portiolli of Winthrop, 7-6 (4), 6-2, in Flight B action. In Flight D, Perrotta dropped a three-set decision to Julia Gargera-Ceno of UMBC, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2. Sarah Henderson was forced to retire in her Flight E match against Lindsey Leblang of UNC-Wilmington 5-0.

In Flight A doubles play, Sandor and Bedard were edged by Nisha Crouser and Stephanie Synn of Davidson, 8-5.

Perrotta and Roth will face Giulia Andreazza and Andra Voinea of East Tennessee State tomorrow morning. Henderson and Prishlyak will also play tomorrow morning against Katie Blow and Megan Conley of Virginia Tech.

In the consolation rounds, Bedard defeated Karina Kedzo of East Tennessee State, 6-1, 6-3, and will play in the consolation finals tomorrow at noon with the opponent to be determined. Perrotta lost a 6-4, 6-3 match to Sydney Smith of William & Mary in the Flight D consolation round, while Henderson was forced to withdraw in her Flight E match.
