NORFOLK, Va.; October 20, 2010 - The Penn State women's tennis team will travel to Norfolk, Va., for the ITA Women's Atlantic Regional. The tournament will run from Thursday through Sunday.
Penn State is among 23 teams competing in the tournament. The Nittany Lions are the lone Big Ten school.
Competing this weekend will be juniors Fernanda Perrotta (Buenos Aires, Argentina) and Maria Prishlyak (Kiev, Ukraine), sophomores Petra Januskova (Ottawa, Canada) and Amy Simidian (Carlstadt, N.J.) and freshmen Marie Frederique-Bedard (Montreal, Canada) and Carmen Sandor (Toronto, Canada).
The tournament beings with a 32-player qualifying draw on Wednesday. Of the 32-player qualifier, eight will advance to the main draw. The 64-player main draw will begin Thursday. The tournament will also include a 48-team doubles draw.
Play will begin at 9 a.m., Thursday with singles qualifying. The main draw doubles will begin Thursday at 3 p.m. Play in the singles main draw will begin Friday at 11 a.m.
The Nittany Lions have several players ranked highly in this weekend's tournament. Januskova is the fifth-seeded player in the main draw. In doubles, Januskova and Simidian are the ninth-ranked team.
Competing alongside the Nittany Lions in Norfolk will be Maryland, James Madison, St. Joseph's, Norfolk State, Towson, West Virginia, Virginia, Radford, Pittsburgh, Virginia Tech, Old Dominion, Marshall, Howard, Navy, Richmond, Temple, William & Mary, Liberty, Georgetown, George Washington, U.M.B.C. and Virginia Commonwealth.
