CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- The Penn State men's swimming & diving team wrapped up the first day of competition at Virginia in a double dual meet against the Cavaliers and Indiana.
Mitch Scherer (Pottstown, Pa.) picked up a second-place showing in the 100 breaststroke, edged at the wall by UVa's Taylor Grey (55.75), finishing in a time of 56.00.
The 200 freestyle relay squad finished in third with a time of 1:24.54 as Brian Alden (Lansdale, Pa.), Shane Austin (Kennett Square, Pa.), Andrew Sideras (Philadelphia, Pa.), and James Wilson (Nottingham, Pa.) rounded out the relay.
Alden followed up the relay performance later in the evening with a time of 45.13 in the 100 freestyle, the closest finish of the day. Scot Robison of Virginia touched the wall in 45.04 with Titus Knight right behind in 45.07, finishing .06 ahead of Alden.
The 400 medley relay capped the evening with a third-place finish as Sean Grier (Hummelstown, Pa.), Scherer, Matt Salig (Downingtown, Pa.) and Alden competed in a time of 3:20.79.
Other notable results included Scott Marino (Scotch Plains, N.J.), who placed sixth in the 200 IM (1:53.44) to lead the four Nittany Lions in the event. Luke Bushman (Green Bay, Wis.) was ninth in a time of 4:37.76 in the 500 freestyle. Jeff Gomez (Morristown, N.J.) led the backstroke crew with a time of 1:52.29 in the 200 back.
The diving event kicked off the two-day meet as PSU's Jordan Harris (Philipsburg, Pa.) gathered a score of 276.65 to take sixth in the three-meter dive. Alex Marchinski (Shillington, Pa.) was seventh with a 275.05. In the one-meter diving event, Marchinski (260.90) was seventh and Harris (248.30) eighth.
The Nittany Lion swimmers return to the pool tomorrow beginning at 11:00 a.m.
