CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The PSU men's swimming & diving team fell to host No. 11 Virginia, 186-150, and 10th-ranked Indiana, 182-154, in a two-day tri-meet this weekend.
The 200 medley relay kicked off Saturday's action with a 1:31.78 behind the power of Sean Grier (Hummelstown, Pa.), Mitch Scherer (Pottstown, Pa.), Matt Salig (Downingtown, Pa.) and Brian Alden (Lansdale, Pa.). The foursome was narrowly edged out by UVa's first-place team that touched the wall in 1:31.04 and Indiana (1:31.24).
Scherer returned to the pool for one of his premier events, the 200 breaststroke. The junior swam a 2:03.50, finishing third behind two Virginia swimmers. Another top individual performance was turned in by Salig in the 100 fly as the freshman finished fifth in a time of 50.43.
Other notable performances included Luke Bushman (Green Bay, Wis.) who was sixth in the 400 IM (4:02.41) and ninth in the 100 back with a time of 51.08. Alden was eighth in the 200 freestyle (1:42.13) and Jack Zierenberg (Allison Park, Pa.) was the Nittany Lions' top finisher (ninth) in the 1,000 freestyle with a time of 9:42.07. In the 50 free, James Wilson (Nottingham, Pa.) swam 21.46 in eighth place.
The day was capped off with a fourth-place showing by the Nittany Lion 400 freestyle relay of Alden, Salig, Wilson and Shane Austin (Kennett Square, Pa.). The quartet of swimmers posted a time of 3:05.68 on Sunday afternoon.
