Women's Tennis' Petra Januskova Wins Single Championship at WMU Super Challenge

WMU Super Challenge Results (Day 3)

KALAMAZOO, Mich.; November 7, 2010 - Penn State sophomore Petra Januskova (Ottawa, Canada) won her final singles match of the WMU Super Challenge and was crowned the singles champion as she went 6-0 in doubles and singles play throughout the weekend.

Januskova defeated Western Michigan's Jill Remyse 6-3, 6-2 in the third round of singles. The sophomore improved her record in the fall to 16-3. Freshman Marie-Frederique Bedard (Montreal, Canada) also won her singles match Sunday as she defeated Miloslava Shustova of Western Michigan (6-0, 7-6) (1).

In other singles action, sophomore Amy Simidian (Carlstadt, N.J.) fell to Western Michigan's April Kerr (6-1, 6-1), while freshman Carmen Sandor (Toronto, Canada) was bested by Western Michigan's Maria Nivia (6-4, 6-3). Junior Fernanda Perrotta (Buenos Aires, Argentina), who was named doubles champion with partner Januskova yesterday, dropped a 6-4, 6-0 decision to Rachel Denny of Western Michigan.

The Nittany Lions went 17-12 throughout the weekend and were named the singles and doubles champions as Perrotta and Januskova won the doubles pool and Januskova claimed the singles crown.

"I thought we competed hard throughout the weekend," said head coach Dawna Denny. "We are using this tournament as a springboard for the spring season. We still need to continue with our development. Petra and Fernanda played solid this weekend. They are a great team and a fantastic option for our spring lineup."

The WMU Super Challenge marked the end of the fall season for the Nittany Lions. They will kick off their regular season when they face Akron on Jan. 22 at home.
