The Nittany Lions and Gators are meeting for the third time, with all three meetings in bowl games. Florida has won the two previous contests, in the 1962 Gator Bowl (17-7) and the 1998 Florida Citrus Bowl (21-6).

Nittany Lions and Gators to Clash For Third Time in Tampa Two of the nation's storied powers will meet for just the third time in the 25th Outback Bowl, as Penn State and Florida meet for the first time in 13 years. The Nittany Lions and Gators rank among the nation's Top 10 winningest programs over the past six years. Since 2005, Florida is 64-15 record (81.0) to rank No. 4 nationally and Penn State is No. 10 with a 58-18 mark (76.3). The Outback Bowl is the only 2010-11 post-season game featuring head coaches that both have won a national championship. The Nittany Lions are playing in their fifth New Year's bowl game in the past six years, having played in the 2006 FedEx Orange Bowl, 2007 Outback Bowl, 2009 Rose Bowl and 2010 Capital One Bowl. The Gators lead the series, 2-0, winning in the 1962 Gator Bowl (17-7) and 1998 Florida Citrus Bowl (21-6). Eighteen Penn State seniors, eight of whom have been regular starters, will be playing their final game.
