Jan. 21, 2011

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The Penn State swimming & diving teams will host St. Bonaventure in a non-conference dual meet at the McCoy Natatorium on Saturday at noon.

The Penn State women's swimming & diving team enters the competition following an outstanding performance last week as the squad swept Maryland, Pittsburgh, and Villanova during a meet in College Park, Md. Amy Modglin led the way as she won the 200-freestyle, 200-backstroke, and 400-IM. For her performance, she was honored as the Big Ten Swimmer of the Week for the second time this season.

Overall, the Nittany Lions enters the competition at 5-2, while St. Bonaventure has a 2-3 record coming into their meet this afternoon with Binghamton.

In 13 all-time meetings between the two programs, Penn State holds a pristine 13-0 record, including a 9-0 mark in Happy Valley. Last year, the two squads faced off in the season opener with PSU securing a 174-60 victory. In their first collegiate action, Merritt Krawczyk and Amy Modglin both won events against the Bonnies.

The Penn State men enter the weekend riding a wave of momentum after a strong showing in Maryland last week. Against the host Terrapins and intrastate rival Pittsburgh, the Lions swept its opposition and posted 13 victories. Luke Bushman won four events, including three individual disciplines during the meet.

Penn State now sits at 2-4, while St. Bonaventure stands at 2-3 entering today's competition with Binghamton.

Dating back to their first match-up in 1977, Penn State has dominated its competitions with St. Bonaventure with a perfect 26-0 mark. During the opener of the 2009-10 campaign, the Nittany Lions picked up a 144-97 victory over the Bonnies. Brian Alden led the way with three victories for PSU.

Penn State will be back in action next Friday when the squad kicks-off a two-day Big Ten meet at Michigan that will also feature Ohio State and Northwestern. Friday's races begin at 5 p.m. with Saturday's action starting at 11 a.m.
