UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.; January 24, 2011 -- The Penn State men's and women's fencing teams traveled to St. John's this weekend, Jan 23 to compete against some of the most elite collegiate fencers in the country. The National Champions faced challenging opponents proving to be a test for the Nittany Lions.
National Champion Margherita Guzzi Vincenti found the greatest success, not dropping one bout in the women's epee. The sophomore was the only Nittany Lion to defeat all of her opponents.
Women's captain Doris Willette went 11-3 in the foil, going undefeated against Columbia, St. John's and Ohio State.
The women's team was able to conquer Harvard and Ohio State, 17-10, 20-7, respectively.
In the men's foil Miles Chamley-Watson went undefeated against Columbia and Harvard finishing the day with an overall record of 11-4. Teammate David Willette posted a 12-3 record with a clean sweep against Columbia, Harvard and St. John's.
The men's team found success against all their opponents except for Notre Dame who overcame the Nittany Lions 16-11.
Next weekend, Jan. 29 Penn State will host Duke, Drew, U. Penn, UNC, Temple and Johns Hopkins. Action will begin at 9 a.m. in the White Building.
