Dylan Alton Claims 149 Title at Edinboro Open

Feb. 13, 2011

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Penn State Nittany Lion freshman Dylan Alton (Mill Hall, Pa.), red-shirting this season, blazed through the field at the 2011 Edinboro Open to claim the 149-pound title at the event. Alton was joined by 11 other Nittany Lions, most wrestling unattached.

The Mill Hall native went 4-0 with one pin to win the crown. His pin was a quick one, coming in just 0:16. If Alton were not red-shirting, the pin would be the second fastest in school history but overall results of red-shirts do not count towards their career records or in the Penn State record books. Joining Alton in the finals was classmate Sam Sherlock (West Mifflin, Pa.), who went 4-1 on the day and took second at 141. Sherlock had a major, a technical fall and a pin and lost in the finals to the tournament's top seed, Nick Lester of Oklahoma. Red-shirt freshman James Vollrath (Richboro, Pa.) also advanced to the finals at 165 to take second place. Vollrath posted a 3-1 record with a major and lost 3-1 in the finals to Pittsburgh's Tyler Wilps.

Senior Eric Caschera (South Williamsport, Pa.) went 3-2 at 125 to take fourth place while true freshman Cameron Kelly (Pittsford, N.Y.) went 3-2 at 125 to place fifth. True freshman Rob Vollrath (Richboro, Pa.) posted a 3-2 mark at 133 to take fifth and classmate Jon Gingrich (Wingate, Pa.) went 4-2 at heavyweight to place fifth as well.

Freshman Kyle Moran (Oxford, Pa.) picked up two wins at 141 while classmate Seth Beitz (Juniata, Pa.) grabbed one at that weight. Freshman David Church (Erie, Pa.) won twice at 157 while older brother Andrew Church (Erie, Pa.) picked up two wins at 157. True freshman Justin Haug (Galeton, Pa.) also competed at 165 at the event.
