Standout Individual Performances for Nittany Lions

Feb. 27, 2011

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.; February 27, 2011 - The men's and women's fencing teams did as well as was expected of them this weekend, according to head coach Emmanuil Kaidanov. The Nittany Lions competed in a one-day event hosted by Temple University walking away with some standout individual performances.

Due to some of their key competitors competing elsewhere, the women's team was lacking a true leader. However, despite this they were able to defeat Temple University, whom they had lost to in the beginning of the season.

Margherita Guzzi-Vincenti went 7-2 in the women's epee for the day. The 2010 National Champion has had a superb season thus far, proving to be a consistently strong member of the team.

The men were also missing some key leaders today due to injury, but were able to pull out strong individual performances.

David Willette went undefeated in the men's foil in his run of nine bouts. Adrian Bak and Daniel Gomez- Tanamachi both went 7-2 in the men's saber and foil, respectively.

This was the last event for the Nittany Lions before they head to the Mid-Atlantic South Regionals on Saturday March 12. The competition will act as a qualifier for the NCAA National Tournament, which begins on March 26.
