UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa..; March, 27, 2011 - The Penn State women's tennis team (5-10, 0-3) fell in a long match that lasted over five hours to the Iowa Hawkeyes 5-2 on Sunday. Sophomore Amy Simidian (Carlstadt, N.J.) defeated Lynn Poggensee-Wei to keep the Nittany Lions alive.
In doubles action, senior Denisa Zobeideh (Weston, Fla.) and junior Maria Prishlyak (Kiev, Ukraine) fell in third doubles to Lynn Poggensee-Wei and Ally Majercik, 8-3. In first doubles, Januskova and Simidian fell to the No. 40 ranked pairing of Sonja Molnar and Jessica Young, 8-4, to give the Hawkeyes the doubles point. Freshman Carmen Sandor (Toronto, Canada) and junior Fernanda Perrotta (Buenos Aires, Argentina) were edged by Christina Harazin and Alexis Dorr, 8-6, in second doubles.
The action moved to sixth singles as Prishlyak faced off against Escobar. Prishlyak lost the first set and battled hard in the second but eventually fell, 6-2, 7-5 to give the Hawkeyes a 2-0 lead in the match. In fourth singles, Perrotta helped the Nittany Lions get back on track as she defeated Harazin, 7-6 (5), 6-3, to tighten the match to 2-1. In a grueling fourth singles match, Zobeideh won the first set but fell in the final two to Dorr, 1-6, 6-3, 6-3, to push the Hawkeyes lead to 3-1.
In second singles, Simidian played in a marathon-match against Poggensee-Wei. The lefties played for nearly three hours and were forced into two tiebreak sets. Simidian won the first set but fell in the second before battling hard in a third set tiebreak to defeat Poggensee-Wei 6-3, 6-7 (3), 7-6 (4) and keep the Nittany Lions alive at 3-2.
In third singles, Sandor played a long three set match against Young. After falling in the first, Sandor played hard to win the second before eventually losing a back-and-forth third set, 6-4, 6-7 (4), 6-3, to give the Hawkeyes the match. Januskova played in first singles and was edged by No. 114 Sonja Molnar, 7-6 (2), 7-6 (5). Januskova and Molnar had met at the ITA All Americans where Molnar defeated Januskova, 6-3, 6-2
Penn State will be back in action as they continue their stretch of Big Ten opponents when they host the Northwestern Wildcats on Sat., Apr. 2 at 11 a.m. followed by a trip to East Lansing to take on the Michigan State Spartans on Sat., Apr. 9 at 11 a.m.
