Penn State - Kent State Baseball Game Cancelled

March 30, 2011

KENT, Ohio - After the Penn State baseball team jumped out to an early 1-0 lead against Kent State, snow began to blanket the field and the umpires were forced to cancel the contest after just three innings at Schoonover Stadium.

The Nittany Lions (15-7) jumped out to a one-run lead in the top of the third when Joey DeBernardis drove in Luis Montesinos with an RBI double. Unfortunately, the intermittent flurries early in the game quickly transformed into a driving snowstorm in the bottom half of the third as the umpires waved off the remainder of the game.

The decision wasted an excellent performance by freshman Greg Welsh, who was making his first career start on the mound. During his three innings, the southpaw allowed just one hit while keeping the Golden Flashes off the scoreboard.

Penn State will return to action on Friday when the squad kicks off Big Ten action with a three-game series against Illinois at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. Friday's start time has been moved to 3:30 p.m. in order to avoid poor weather later in the evening.
