UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Penn State senior midfielder Maggie Dunbar (Cockeysville, Md.) has been named to the Tewaaraton Award Foundation's Women's Preseason Watch List, the Greater Washington Sports Alliance announced on Friday.
Dunbar, a 2010 First Team All-ALC and IWLCA All-West Region honoree, was a key figure in the midfield last season, making a highly successful transition from defense, where she spent her first two years as a Nittany Lion. An athletic and versatile player who excels on both ends of the field, Dunbar started all 17 games a year ago, leading the Nittany Lions in ground balls (38) and caused turnovers (19) while finishing second in draw controls (32). She also amassed 11 points on two goals and nine assists.
Honored on the ALC Preseason Team, the Penn State co-captain has started all three games thus far in 2011, totaling five caused turnovers, four draw controls, two ground balls, and one goal.
The annual preseason watch list is made up of the top lacrosse players across all three divisions of collegiate lacrosse and highlights the early hopefuls for the 2011 Tewaaraton Award. All watch list nominees are screened and identified by a selection committee comprised of college coaches. The watch list will eventually be pared down three more times until the top 10 Tewaaraton Award finalists are announced in May.
The Tewaaraton Award, which is renowned nationally as the pre-eminent honor bestowed in collegiate lacrosse, was formally established in August 2000 by The University Club of Washington, D.C. and is awarded annually to the NCAA male and female players of the year.
The 11th annual Tewaaraton Award will be presented on June 2, 2011 at the historical Warner Theatre in Washington, D.C.
