ANN ARBOR, Mich..; April 10, 2011 - The Penn State women's tennis team (6-12, 1-5) lost to the No. 7 Michigan Wolverines 6-1 on Sunday. Junior Maria Prishlyak (Kiev, Ukraine) earned the lone singles point for the Nittany Lions.
Play started off in third doubles as Michelle Sulahian and Sam Crister defeated senior Denisa Zobeideh (Weston, Fla.) and Prishlyak, 8-1, to give the Wolverines the edge for the doubles point. In first singles, freshman Carmen Sandor (Toronto, Canada) and sophomore Petra Januskova (Ottawa, Canada) fell to the No. 8 doubles pairing of Brooke Bolender and Denise Muresean, 8-2, to give the Wolverines the doubles point. In the final doubles pairing, sophomore Amy Simidian (Carlstadt, N.J.) and freshman Marie-Frederique Bedard (Montreal, Canada) were defeated by Whitney Taney and Riki Tatsuno, 8-2.
Play moved to sixth singles as Sarah Henderson (Bloomington, Ind.) fell to Michelle Sulahain, 6-2, 6-2, to push the Wolverines lead to 2-0. In fourth singles, Sandor fell to No. 98 Whitney Taney, 6-3, 6-0, to give Michigan a 3-0 lead. The Wolverines clinched the match in second singles as No. 73 Brooke Bolender defeated a Simidian, who battled hard, 7-5, 6-1.
In third singles, Zobeideh fell to No. 69 Sam Crister, 6-4, 6-2. Januskova, who leads the team in singles victories, faced off against the No. 7 player in the country, Denise Muresean, and fell, 6-2, 6-4.
In fifth singles, it took Prishlyak three sets to defeat Rika Tatusno, 6-4, 6-7, 1-0 (11), to give the Nittany Lions their only point of the afternoon.
The Nittany Lions will return to Happy Valley to host the Minnesota Golden Gophers on Fri., Apr. 15 at 5 p.m. followed by a match with the Wisconsin Badgers at 11 a.m. on Sun., Apr. 17.
