Final Stats

BLOOMINGTON, Ind..; April 24, 2011 - The Penn State Nittany Lions (6-15, 2-8) fell in their last dual match of the season in Bloomington, Ind. to the Indiana Hoosiers 6-1 on Easter Sunday. Freshman Carmen Sandor (Toronto, Canada) earned the solo singles point for the Nittany Lions for her ninth victory of the season. The final score didn't do much justice for the Nittany Lions as five of the six singles matches went to three sets. Penn State travels to Ann Arbor, Mich. for the Big Ten Tournament where the Nittany Lions will face seventh-seeded Indiana Thursday at 1 p.m.

Play started off in doubles as Marie-Frederique Bedard (Montreal, Canada) and Sandor fell to Sophie Garre and Diana Kyllman 8-4 in third doubles, to give the Hoosiers the edge for the doubles point. In second doubles, sophomore Amy Simidian (Carlstadt, N.J.) and senior Denisa Zobeideh (Weston, Fla.) battled hard but were edged by Kayla Fujimoto and Evgeniya Vertesheva, 9-7, to give Indiana the doubles point.

In first doubles, two ranked teams squared off as No. 79 sophomore Petra Januskova (Ottawa, Canada) and junior Fernada Perrotta (Buenos Aires, Argentina) gave the No. 48 ranked Leslie Hureau and Myriam Sopel everything they had, but were bested, 9-8.

Play moved to singles as Simidian faced No. 115 Evgeniya Vertesheva in second doubles. Simidian fought hard but was forced to retire in the second set, 6-2, 3-0 ret. to push the Hoosier lead to 2-0. Sandor gave the Nittany Lions hope in fourth singles as she defeated Fujimoto, 7-5, 3-6, 6-3, to tighten the margin to 2-1.

In third singles, Zobeideh won a solid first set against Charlotte Martin, but fell in the final two, 4-6, 6-1, 6-4, to give the Hoosiers a 3-1 advantage. Bedard fought hard in fifth singles with the Nittany Lions on the brink but was beaten in a tough second set to Sopel, 6-3, 7-6, to clinch the match for the Indiana Hoosiers.

In sixth singles, Perrotta won the first set and nearly pulled off the second, but was edged by Garre, 3-6, 7-5, 6-4, as the Hoosiers increased their lead to 5-1. Singles leader Januskova faced a tough opponent in No. 62 Hureau, but lost in a tough third set, 6-1, 3-6, 6-4, to end the match at 6-1.

The Nittany Lions will conclude their season at the Big Ten Championships in Ann Arbor, Mich. on Apr. 28 through May. 1.
