UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The Penn State Nittany Lion men's lacrosse team, now ranked No. 20 nationally, was honored this week with Colonial Athletic Association Co-Player of the Week and CAA Rookie of the Week laurels. Junior Matthew Mackrides (Newtown Square, Pa.) was Co-Player of the Week while freshman Steven Bogert (Carlsbad, Calif.) earned his first Rookie of the Week award.
Mackrides share the Player of the Week honors with Hofstra's Jay Card. Mackrides played an integral part in Penn State's road-upset of No. 19 Delaware Saturday. The junior scored on four of his five shots on goal and added assist in the win. Defensively, Mackrides picked up five groundballs and helped limit the Blue Hens to just three goals.
Bogert earned his first conference weekly honor following his role in the Nittany Lions' road-upset of No. 19 Delaware Saturday - vaulting Penn State into a first-place tie in the league standings. The rookie logged a team-high seven groundballs and helped limit UD to just three goals on a total of 39 shots (15 on goal).
No. 20 Penn State is now 7-5 overall and tied for first in the CAA with a 4-1 record. The Nittany Lions, under the guidance of head coach Jeff Tambroni, have clinched a spot in the CAA play-offs in Tambroni's first year as head coach. Penn State will look to clinch the No. 1 seed when it visits No. 8 Hofstra on Saturday, April 30, at 7 p.m.
