ANN ARBOR, Mich. April, 28, 2011 - The 10th seeded Penn State women's tennis team (6-16, 2-9) dropped a season-ending match 4-0 to the No. 7 seed Indiana Hoosiers today at the Big Ten Tournament in Ann Arbor, Mich.
In doubles action, the Nittany Lions fell on the third court as freshmen Marie-Frederique Bedard (Monteal, Canada) and Carmen Sandor (Toronto, Canada) lost to Sophie Garre and Dana Kyllman, 8-4, to give the Hoosiers the advantage. In second doubles, sophomore Amy Simidian (Carlstadt, N.J.) and senior Denisa Zobeideh (Weston, Fla.) fell in a tough match to Kayla Fujimoto and Evgeniya Vertesheva, 8-4, to give Indiana the doubles point. First doubles was suspended as sophomore Petra Januskova (Ottawa, Canada) and junior Fernanda Perrotta (Buenos Aires, Argentina) were trailing No. 56 Myriam Sopel and Leslie Hureau, 7-5.
Action moved to singles as Perrotta faced Sopel in sixth singles. Perrotta fell in straight sets, 6-0, 6-1, to give the Hoosiers a 2-0 lead. In fifth singles, Bedard fought hard in fifth singles against Fujimoto by making every game difficult, but eventually fell, 6-2, 6-2, to push the Indiana lead to 3-0. In second singles, Simidian took No. 114 Vertesheva to seven games in the first set but fell 7-5 and was beaten in the second, 7-5, 6-2, to give the Hoosiers the match, 4-0.
Januskova was locked in a tight match in first singles with No. 57 Leslie Hureau, 7-6, 2-1, as the match ended. Sandor earned the lone point for the Nittany Lions last time against the Hoosiers and held a 4-3 lead over Martin in fourth singles. Zobeideh was trailing Zapadalova, 3-0 in third singles.
The No. 7 seed Indiana Hoosiers will move on to play the No. 2 seed Northwestern Wildcats on Friday. The Nittany Lions will continue play in the fall.
