UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. --Penn State hosts the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) for its respective softball and baseball championships on Friday. Nittany Lion Softball Park will play host to four PIAA softball championships and Medlar Field at Lubrano Park will see four PIAA baseball championships.
The PIAA softball portion of the day kicks off with the AA Championship at 11:00 a.m. when local high school Philipsburg-Osceola takes on District 3 champion Brandywine Heights of the Reading area. Two Bucks County, District 1 schools face off in the 1:00 p.m. game as Pennsbury and Hatboro-Horsham play at Beard Field.
The quadruple header concludes with the A and AAA Championships at 3:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m., respectively. Schuykill County's Minersville plays against Clarion in the A Championship before WPIAL's Valley squares off against Lancaster's Manheim Central to end the day's action.
The all-day baseball action will kick off with the AAA Championship beginning at 10:30 a.m. Tunkhannock, which captured the District 2 title earlier this year, will face District 3 entrant Northern York for the state title. Later in the day, the A champ will be crowned when District 3 champion Reading Central Catholic squares off with District 7's Serra Catholic at 1 p.m.
Following the two early bouts, District 11 champ Salisbury Township will face District 7 titlist Riverside at 3:30 p.m. for the AA crown. Friday's action will conclude at 6 p.m. with the AAAA championship when Spring-Ford and Conestoga battle in a rematch of the District 1 title bout.
All four baseball games will be broadcast live on the Pennsylvania Cable Network (PCN), while the softball contests will be aired in tape delay fashion on PCN. Tickets will be available one hour prior to the day's first game at the stadium box offices. Parking is available next to both facilities.
This is the first time Penn State has hosted either championship event as the University won the bid last summer for four seasons. For more information, visit www.piaa.org.
