Sophomore Casimir Loxsom (New Haven, Conn.) and senior Samuel Borchers (Yellow Springs, Ohio) continue to impress at the USATF Outdoor Championships, both successfully advancing through the semi-final round of the men's 800-meters, Friday at Historic Hayward Field. Also enjoying an outstanding afternoon in the preliminary rounds were alums Bridget Franek and Stephanie Pezzulo, who both qualified for the final of the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase.
Running in the first of two semi-final heats, Loxsom confidently zipped to the front of the pack with 200-meters to go, sprinting down the homestretch to hold on for third place in his heat, and earn one of the four automatically-qualifying slots. Loxsom would cross in 1:45.85 - the second-fastest effort of his career - in a blistering finish, in which the top four finishers crossed within .07 seconds of each other. In a race that went out from the gun, California-Irvine's Charles Jock took the heat in 1:45.80, with Oregon Track Club's Tyler Mulder and Nick Symmonds placing second and fourth, finishing in 1:45.82, and 1:45.87, respectively.
Conversely, Borchers' heat went out conservatively and turned in to a kicker's race, with the senior taking the fourth and final qualifying spot in 1:49.41.
