Four Nittany Lions Tackle 2011 FIFA Women's World Cup

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Penn State women's soccer is well represented at the 2011 FIFA Women's World Cup starting Sunday in Germany. Head coach Erica Walsh is serving as an assistant on the U.S. squad, which features defender Ali Krieger, a 2006 alum. Canadians Erin McLeod and Carmelina Moscato open play in the quadrennial tournament on Sunday against host Germany.

McLeod, a goalkeeper, is making her third straight World Cup showing, while Moscato is on the team for the second time. The Canucks face a tall task in playing two-time defending champion Germany, the host nation for this cycle's event. The game, which begins at Noon ET, is taking place in Berlin and will be shown on ESPN.

The ESPN family of networks will be televising every game during the tournament on ESPN or ESPN2. All games will be shown on ESPN3.com. Canada continues Group A play on Thursday, June 30 against France at Noon ET on ESPN. Group competition concludes vs. Nigeria on Tuesday, July 5, broadcast live on ESPN2.

The Americans kick off play on Tuesday at 12:15 p.m. ET against North Korea in Group C. Walsh and Krieger take on Colombia at Noon ET on Saturday, July 2 before wrapping up group play vs. Sweden at 2:45 ET on Wednesday, July 6. All the United States matches will be shown live on ESPN. Krieger is making her debut appearance for the Stars and Stripes and is projected to start at left fullback. Walsh has been serving under head coach Pia Sundhage since 2007 as part of the full National Team and helped the team win gold at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
