UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Penn State women's lacrosse player Katy Wick (Winter Springs, Fla.) has been named the inaugural recipient of the Susan Delaney-Scheetz Senior Scholar Athlete Award. Presented by the American Lacrosse Conference, the award honors the graduating senior with the highest overall grade point average among the league's student-athletes.
Wick graduated in the spring, earning her degree in advertising and public relations. A two-time Big Ten Distinguished Scholar Award recipient and Academic All-Big Ten honoree, she was named to the Dean's List every semester at Penn State. Active on campus, Wick was a member of the Athletic Director's Leadership Institute and served as vice president of the Student Athletic Advisory Board, representing Penn State at Big Ten and NCAA meetings.
In May, Wick earned one of five John W. Oswald Awards given annually to graduating seniors who have provided outstanding leadership in at least one of several areas of activity at the University.
A four-year member of the women's lacrosse team, Wick saw action in 53 games throughout her career, coming to Happy Valley as an attacking player before making the successful transition to defense following her sophomore year. As a senior in 2011, the Winter Springs, Fla. native started a career-high 17 games, contributing to a defensive unit that ranked among the best in the American Lacrosse Conference.
The award is named in honor of Susan Delaney-Scheetz, the former women's lacrosse coach and recently retired Associate Athletic Director and Senior Woman Administrator at Penn State. Delaney-Scheetz won a total of 67 games, captured two national championships, and earned two runner-up finishes in a stellar four-year stint (1986-89) as head coach of the Nittany Lions women's lacrosse program. During her time as an administrator, Penn State women's teams won four NCAA championships, 46 regular season Big Ten championships, and 11 conference tournament titles. Inducted into the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame in 2000, Delaney-Scheetz was recently named a 2011 NACWAA Administrator of the Year award honoree.
