Women's Tennis Begins Fall Competition this Weekend

Sept. 21, 2011

University Park, Pa. - The Penn State women's tennis team kicks off the 2011 season at the 15th annual Cissie Leary Invitational starting Friday. The tournament, which runs through Sunday, will be held at the University of Pennsylvania's Hamlin Tennis Center in Philadelphia, Pa.

The Nittany Lions are the lone Big Ten team competing this weekend, as they will face a field of eight other teams in both singles and doubles matches. This marks the first time Penn State will compete in the Cissie Leary Invitational since the 2006-07 season. Other teams participating in the tournament include Temple, Maryland, Columbia, Drexel, Delaware, Cornell, and Fairfield, along with tournament host Pennsylvania.

Penn State will compete in two other tournaments during the fall season - the Rice Invitational in Houston, Texas, Oct. 7th through Oct. 9th and the Western Michigan Super Challenge in Kalamazoo, Mich., Nov. 4th through Nov. 6th. In addition, players have the opportunity to participate in the All-American Championships, ITA Regionals, and National Indoors tournaments if they individually qualify.
