Los Angeles, Calif. - Petra Januskova (Ottawa, Canada) was bested in the round of 16 at the ITA All-American Prequalifier this afternoon at UCLA. The junior lost to Vanderbilt's Jackie Wu, 6-4, 6-0. In the ITA Preseason Poll Wu was ranked No. 100, while Januskova was ranked No. 108.
Although Januskova was ousted from the prequalifying tournament, she still has a chance to move into the qualifying round of play by earning one of 28 at-large bids. The at-large bids will be selected tomorrow and qualifying play would begin Oct. 4-6, at the Riviera Tennis Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif.
In the opening round of prequalifying play yesterday, Januskova defeated Monica Gorny of Duke University, 6-1, 6-1. In the round of 32, the Nittany Lion faced Lynn Blau of Georgia Tech. After losing the first set, 1-6, Januskova bounced back by winning the next two, 6-4, 6-2. In the ITA Preseason poll Blau was ranked No. 124.
The entire Nittany Lion team will continue play at the Rice Invitational in Houston, Oct. 7-9.
