Januskova Shines in Third Day at ITA Regional

Norfolk, Va. - The Penn State women's tennis team continued competition in the ITA Regional today. A total of five Nittany Lions competed in the singles, doubles, and consolation brackets.

Eighth-ranked Petra Januskova (Ottawa, Canada) had a phenomenal day on the court, going 3-0 in her matches. In singles action, the junior easily defeated Maryland's Welma Luus, 6-2, 6-1, in the round of 32. In the round of 16, Januskova breezed by fourteenth-ranked Maria Fuccillo of Virginia, 6-0, 6-4. She will be the only Nittany Lion continuing in the singles draw tomorrow, when she faces second-ranked Emily Fraser of Virginia in the quarterfinals.

In doubles action, Januskova and her partner, Nina Sertic (Zagrab, Croatia) came into the tournament as the ninth-ranked pairing. In today's round of 16, the duo upset sixth-ranked Maria Fuccillo and Li Xi of Virginia, 8-4. In Sertic's singles bout, she lost to No. 16 Cristina Stancu of Maryland in the round of 32, 6-2, 6-0.

In other singles play, Chelsea Utting (Peachtree City, Ga.) was bested in the round of 32 by ninth-ranked Alex Bara of VCU, 6-2, 6-0. In the same round, Marie Bedard (Montreal, Canada) lost to seventh-ranked Li Xi of Virginia, 6-2, 6-0.

In the consolation singles bracket, Fernanda Perrotta (Buenos Aires, Argentina) stormed by West Virginia's Mary Chupa in the round of 16, 6-0, 6-2. She will face either Virginia's Marjorie Baker or Temple's Alicia Doms in the consolation quarterfinals tomorrow.

The ITA Regional runs through Tuesday and will continue competition tomorrow. The entire Nittany Lion team will finish out its fall tournament schedule at the Western Michigan Super Challenge Nov. 4-6.
