Nittany Lions Place 12th at Wolfpack Intercollegiate

RALEIGH, N.C. - A tournament-low score of 294 in the final round of play boosted the Penn State men's golf team into a 12th place finish at the Wolfpack Intercollegiate at the Lonnie Poole Golf Course on Tuesday.

With rounds of 297-302-294 (893) the Nittany Lions finished 32 strokes behind first-place Memphis. The tigers secured the tournament title with a 9-over-par score of 861 (288-283-290), two strokes ahead of second-place UNCG.

Senior Tommy McDonagh (East Norwalk, Conn.) and sophomore Shane Stewart(Dublin, Ohio) proved to be the top-two contenders for Penn State throughout the tournament as they tallied three-round scores of 219 (73-74-72) and 221 (72-78-71), respectively. In addition to Stewart hitting a career low with his score of 71 in the final round, his tied-for-26 place finish marked the best finish of his career.

Ernesto Marin (Miami, Fla.) came in third for the Nittany Lions with rounds of 79-73-77 (229), placing the junior tied for 61. Freshman Xander McDonald-Smith (Rockaway Park, N.Y.) fell two strokes behind teammate Marin with a 231 (73-84-74) total. McDonald-Smith shed 10 strokes off of his second round total to finish tied for 70. Junior Anthony DeGol(Hollidaysburg, Pa.) posted consistent scores of 79-77-77 (233) to tie for 75.

UNCG's Robert Hoadley shot a personal tournament high in the third round, but regardless was able to hold on to first place on the player leader. The junior finished two strokes ahead of Memphis' Jack Belote.

The Nittany Lions will be on the road again in two weeks when they head out to Big Ten territory to play in the Windon Memorial hosted by Illinois.
