Women's Tennis Set to Play in Rice Invitational this Weekend

Oct. 5, 2011

University Park, Pa. - The Penn State women's tennis team will compete in its second fall tournament this weekend at the Rice Invitational. Competition begins on Friday and will continue through Sunday at Jake Hess Tennis Stadium in Houston, Texas.

The Nittany Lions will be one of six teams participating this weekend, representing the Big Ten as its lone conference competitor. Other schools playing in both singles and doubles matches include DePaul, LSU, Texas, Tulane and tournament host Rice.

In their first tournament of the fall season, Penn State competed in Penn's Cissie Leary Invitational in Philadelphia, Pa from Sept. 23 through Sept. 25. A number of Nittany Lions finished at the top of that competition. Junior Petra Januskova (Ottawa, Canada) won five straight sets to capture the singles title. Januskova and her partner, Nina Sertic (Zagrab, Croatia), placed second in the doubles portion of the tournament. In the consolation bracket, Fernanda Perrotta (Buenos Aires, Argentina) advanced to the semifinal round.

Penn State will compete in the Western Michigan Super Challenge in Kalamazoo, Mich., Nov. 4-6, in its last team tournament of the fall season. If Nittany Lions individually qualify they have the opportunity to participate in the ITA Regionals or National Indoors tournaments.
