AUBURN, Ala. - The Penn State men's swimming & diving team were unable to overcome a strong Auburn side in a dual meet on Friday evening. The Tigers downed the Nittany Lions, 152-86.
Matt Salig (Downingtown, Pa.) was Penn State's (1-1) best hope for a win on Friday, as he finished second in the 200 freestyle (1:39.68) and 200 butterfly (1:49.75). The second-place showings were just .47 and .22 behind an Auburn student-athlete.
Other notable performances included the 400 medley relay team of Nate Savoy (Reading, Pa.), Mitch Scherer (Pottstown, Pa.), Sean Grier (Hummelstown, Pa.) and Brian Alden (Lansdale, Pa.) that swam to a time of 3:18.19, finishing second.
Nick Ankosko (East Brunswick, N.J.) and Kurt Ratcliff (Centreville, Va.) finished second and third in the 1,000 free as well. Ankosko swam a time of 9:33.27, while Ratcliff clocked a 9:42.55.
The meet was a homecoming of sorts for head coach John Hargis, who was an All-American and national champion for the Auburn Tigers in the late `90s. Penn State caps off its two-meet southern swing with a dual session against Georgia Tech on Saturday morning. Competition kicks off at 11:00 a.m. ET.
