UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The Penn State men's soccer program is pleased to announce that it has received a $100,000 donation from Tim and Stephanie Cost for the endowment of a men's soccer scholarship. The gift, which is the largest contribution ever given to the program, will be utilized to establish the Cost Family Endowed Men's Soccer Scholarship.
The scholarship will first be awarded to a student-athlete enrolling at Penn State in January 2012.
The donation is the second provided to the Penn State men's soccer program by the Cost family, adding to a previous gift of $50,000.
"Our greatest legacy from our lives is not what we have done for ourselves but what we have done for others," said Penn State men's soccer head coach Bob Warming. "The Cost family gift will help others, for generations to come, obtain an education and play soccer at Penn State. They are a special family and we are so thankful for their family commitment to our sport."
Cost, a business executive with experience at several of the world's leading companies, is Executive Vice President, Global Corporate Affairs for PepsiCo. He previously held senior positions with APCO Worldwide, Wyeth, ARAMARK, Pharmacia, Bristol-Myers Squibb, Centocor, Inc., and Kodak.
Drew Cost is a 2010 graduate of Penn State and was a four-year starter for the Nittany Lion soccer team. A team co-captain in his senior season, the two-time Second Team All-Big Ten selection compiled 30 points on 10 goals and 10 assists during his collegiate career. Drafted by Real Salt Lake in the 2011 Major League Soccer Draft, he currently plays professionally for the Rochester Rhinos of USL Pro.
A three-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree and a 2010 CoSIDA/ESPN Second Team Academic All-District selection, Cost holds a degree in economics. While at Penn State, Cost was a four-year recipient of the Walter Bahr Soccer Scholarship. Named in honor of the 1950 World Cup hero and Hall of Fame coach, Bahr, along with former Nittany Lion soccer great Dick Packer, were positive influences throughout Cost's time at Penn State.
In addition to his ongoing professional soccer career, Cost was named a volunteer assistant coach at Penn State by Coach Warming in September. He is also assistant coach for the U-16 and U-18 boys' soccer teams (USSF Development Academy) for the premier national club, PA Classics.
