UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Penn State freshman goalkeeper Andrew Wolverton (Snellville, Ga.) has been invited to the U.S. Under-20 Men's National Team's winter training camp to be held from January 2-9 in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
Directed by new U-20 head coach Tab Ramos, the camp will provide players with experience in a national team setting as the program continues to build up to and prepare for the 2013 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Turkey.
Wolverton made an immediate impact in Happy Valley in his freshman campaign, anchoring a defense that broke the Penn State record for shutouts in a season with 12. A starter of all 22 games in 2011, he led the Big Ten in goals against average (0.60), save percentage (.821), shutouts, and shutouts per game (0.55). Nationally, Wolverton ranked ninth in the goals against average and 20th in save percentage.
During the season, Wolverton earned Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week (September 12) and TopDrawerSoccer.com National Team of the Week honors (September 19) and was named Soccer Savings.com/Philly Soccer News College Player of the Week on October 30. In recognition of his standout season, he was selected Third Team All-Freshman by College Soccer News.
Wolverton has prior U.S. National Team experience, earning several call-ups with the U-18 squad. As a member of the team, he played internationally in Argentina, Chile, Portugal, and Israel.
