UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Penn State junior Scott Rosenthal (Clearfield, Pa.) and freshman Tristan Duverglas (West Orange, N.J.) have been recognized with Big Ten weekly gymnastics honors for their standout performances in the No. 2 Nittany Lions' 355.500-347.200 road victory over No. 7 Ohio State last weekend. Rosenthal was named Big Ten Gymnast of the Week for the third time in his career while Duverglas earned his second Big Ten Freshman of the Week accolade this season.
In Penn State's sixth consecutive regular season win over the Buckeyes, the Nittany Lions' posted a season-high team score of 355.500. A 3.5 point improvement over its previous best, Penn State's total was also the highest in the Big Ten and the top road score in the NCAA in 2012.
Versus Ohio State, Rosenthal surpassed the 16.000 threshold in the still rings for the fourth time this season, outdistancing the event runner-up by more than a point with a first place score of 16.100. Ranked No. 1 in the nation in the still rings, the title win was his fourth of the year. Rosenthal is the Penn State program record holder in the still rings (16.300) and ranks second in the NCAA record book.
Duverglas has emerged as the anchor of Penn State's vault line-up and as one the top competitors in the nation in the event in 2012, winning his fourth title in the team's last five meets. Against the Buckeyes, he scored just off his career high (15.300), recording a 15.250 to claim the vault crown. Duverglas, who owns Penn State's top three scores in the event this season, is ranked No. 4 in the nation (No. 2 in the Big Ten) in the vault.
After a week off, the Nittany Lions will return to action on Friday, March 9 when, for the second consecutive year, it competes not only outside the NCAA but also the U.S. border, visiting San Juan, Puerto Rico for a dual meet with the Puerto Rico National Team. In 2011, in its first international competition since 2005, Penn State won three events as a team and three Nittany Lions captured at least a share of an individual event title in a 342.500-340.550 victory.
