UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Sophomore Peter Russell (Ellicott City, Md.) was named the EIVA Offensive Player of the Week, conference officials announced Monday. This is the first honor of Russell's career.
Russell was integral to Penn State's wins against Mount Olive and Cal-Baptist on Feb. 3-4 in the Nittany Lions' first home matches of the season. Russell started both matches at outside hitter. Against the Trojans, Russell posted a team-high nine kills on 14 errorless swings for a .643 hitting percentage. He also tallied an ace and two blocks. The following night against the Lancers, Russell tied for first on the team with eight kills with three digs and a block.
For the weekend, Russell had a team-high 17 kills, averaging 2.83 kills per set on .474 hitting. He also contributed five digs and three blocks.
Penn State remains at home on Feb. 10-11 when it welcomes EIVA foes Rutgers-Newark and NJIT to Rec Hall. Action is set for 7 p.m. both nights and admission is free.
