Lions Drop Big Ten Opener to Indiana

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The Penn State baseball team (4-15) opened up Big Ten play with a 14-2 loss to Indiana on Friday night. Senior Sean Deegan (Readington, N.J.) hit his first homer of the year and senior Joey DeBernardis (Lake Zurich, Ill.) hit two doubles.

Indiana had a seven hit, seven run second inning. All seven runs and six of those hits came with two outs in the inning. The Hoosiers hit two doubles and five singles in the frame to take an early 7-0 lead.

After the Hoosiers added another run in the top of the fourth inning, Penn State would get on the board. After Deegan reached first base on a single, DeBernardis drove him in with a double over the left fielder's head. Indiana had an 8-1 lead after four.

The Hoosiers put up a six-spot in the seventh inning to up the lead to 14-1.

In the bottom of the eighth with two outs, Deegan crushed a ball into the right field bleachers to give the Nittany Lions a second run. DeBernardis hit his second double but was unable to score.

Penn State will be back in action at 2:05 p.m. tomorrow at Medlar Field against the Hoosiers. Sophomore Joe Kurrasch (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) will make the start for Penn State.
