No. 46 Women's Tennis Falls to No. 57 Indiana, 6-1

Final Stats

University Park, Pa. - For the first time in over a month, the No. 46 Penn State women's tennis team (9-4, 1-1) did not come out victorious. The Nittany Lions were bested by the No. 57 Indiana Hoosiers (12-4, 1-1), 6-1 on Friday. Indiana snapped a four match winning streak for Penn State. Chelsea Utting (Peachtree City, Ga.) secured the lone point for the Nittany Lions.

The match began with all three singles duos taking the court. Marie-Frederique Bedard (Montreal, Canada) and Nina Sertic (Zagrab, Croatia) fell to Kayla Fujimoto and Evgeniya Vertesheva, 8-3, in the No. 2 match.

Fernanda Perrotta (Buenos Aires, Argentina) and Sarah Henderson (Bloomington, Ind.) teamed up to take on Shannon Murdy and Leslie Hureau. The Nittany Lion pair was defeated by the Hoosier duo, 8-4, in the No. 3 slot.

With the doubles point secured for Indiana, Petra Januskova (Ottawa, Canada) and Utting were in a battle against Sophie Garre and Katie Klyczek in the number one spot. After a close match, the Nittany Lion pair was eventually upended by the Hoosier duo, 8-6.

After a ten minute intermission, singles action began with Indiana holding a 1-0 lead over Penn State. Perrotta faced Carolyn Chupa In the No. 4 slot. The senior was bested in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3.

In the number five match, Sertic fell to Alecia Kauss, 6-3, 6-2. With four singles matches still in action, the Hoosiers held a 3-0 lead over the Nittany Lions.

Sandor faced Klyczek in the No. 3 slot. The sophomore lost the first set, 6-2, and put up a valiant fight in the second, but eventually fell 7-5. With that point, Indiana clinched the victory.

With the win already in the Hoosiers hands, three matches were still underway. In the No. 6 slot, Bedard took the first set over Fujimoto, 6-1, but was upended in the second and third, 6-1, 6-1, for the loss.

After giving up the first set to Vertesheva, 2-6, Utting stormed back to take the second and third, 6-4, 6-1, claiming the Nittany Lions only point of the match.

In the final match of the day, No. 55 Januskova faced Hureau in an extremely even contest. The junior dropped the first set in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (4), but rallied to take the second, 6-4. In the tiebreaker, Januskova lost a heartbreaker after an intense battle, 11-9.

Next up, the Nittany Lions will host Purdue on Sunday at 11:30 a.m. After that, Penn State will hit the road for the first time in over a month and a half, when it travels to Iowa on Friday, March 30 at 5 p.m. and Nebraska on Sunday, April 1 at 11 a.m. The Nittany Lions will return home the following weekend when they host Minnesota on Friday, April 6 at 5 p.m. and Wisconsin on Sunday, April 8 at 11 a.m.
