Salig's Swim Breaks PSU 200 Fly Record

March 6, 2012

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Sophomore Matt Salig (Downingtown, Pa.) swam a school-record 1:44.18 in the 200 fly on Sunday at the Last Chance Meet hosted by Ohio State. Salig broke Tim Williams's four-year record (1:44.61).

Salig, one of three Nittany Lions including Thomas Mershon (Malvern, Pa.) and James Wilson (Nottingham, Pa.) to compete on Sunday, is looking for a bid to the NCAA Championships in Federal Way, Wash. Salig certainly made a statement for his inclusion and now awaits word, which will be tomorrow, as to whether or not he will compete in his first NCAA Championship event.

Salig's swim is the sixth Penn State school record broken during the 2012 championship season. The Nittany Lions broke five at Big Tens last week in Iowa City. Penn State is looking for a repeat All-America showing from the 200 medley relay with Nate Savoy (Reading, Pa.), Sean Grier (Hummelstown, Pa.), Mitch Scherer (Pottstown, Pa.), Brian Alden (Lansdale, Pa.) and Shane Austin (Kennett Square, Pa.).
