Lincoln, Neb. -
The No. 18 Nebraska women's tennis team (18-2, 4-1) proved to be too much to handle for No. 46 Penn State (10-6, 2-3), cruising to a 6-1 victory over the Nittany Lions. The Cornhuskers jumped out to an early lead and never looked back from there.
The match began with all three doubles pairings taking the court. Nebraska was dominant from the start, as the duo of Janine Weinreich and Izabella Zgierska defeated Marie-Frederique Bedard (Montreal, Canada) and Nina Sertic (Zagrab, Croatia), 8-1, in the No. 3 match.
In No. 2 doubles, Nebraska also got a strong showing from the pair of Mary Weatherholt and Patricia Veresova. The Cornhusker duo upended Fernanda Perrotta (Buenos Aires, Argentina) and Sarah Henderson (Bloomington, Ind.), 8-2, to take the doubles point from the Nittany Lions.
With the point already in hand for Nebraska, Petra Januskova (Ottawa, Canada) and Chelsea Utting (Peachtree City, Ga.) battled No. 40 Madeleine Geibert and Stefanie Weinstein in the No. 1 slot. The ranked Cornhusker pair has been stellar so far this season, compiling a 10-0 record, including three wins over ranked opponents. However, after a tough, back-and-forth match, the Nittany Lion duo snapped the Husker's streak and pulled out an 8-7 victory.
Nebraska used its momentum from doubles play to carry over into singles action. Geibert defeated Sandor in the number three match, 6-0, 6-2. In the No. 5 dual, Bedard fell to Weinreich, 6-2, 6-2. Perrotta was also bested by Weinstein, 6-2, 6-3 in the No. 4 spot. With those three consecutive victories, the Cornhuskers secured the win over the Nittany Lions, taking a 4-0 lead with three singles matches still in progress.
Sertic pulled out the only victory for the Nittany Lions, breezing by Maike Zeppernick in the No. 6 match, 6-2, 6-4.
In the No. 1 dual, No. 61 Januskova took on No. 40 Weatherholt. After an intense battle that proved to be extremely evenly matched, Weatherholt came out victorious with a 6-4, 5-7, 10-7 win.
In the last match of the day to finish, Utting put up a valiant fight against Veresova, but was eventually upended, 7-5, 6-3, in the number two spot.
Next up, the Nittany Lions return home this weekend when they host No. 32 Minnesota on Fri., April 6 at 5 p.m. and Wisconsin on Sun., April 8 at 11 a.m. After that, Penn State will head to Illinois to take on No. 15 Northwestern on Sat., April 14 at 11 a.m. and No. 21 Illinois on Sun., April 15, also at 11 a.m.
