Wintry Weather Cancels Temple Twinbill

April 11, 2012

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Penn State's offense came out firing in the second inning against Temple, but the cold, wintry weather cancelled Tuesday's doubleheader. Penn State returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Indiana at 2:00 p.m. for a doubleheader.

The Nittany Lions (11-22, 3-6 Big Ten) were looking for their fifth straight victory and took a commanding 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second. Jordan Wheatley (Troy, Mich.) kicked off the scoring with an RBI single off the centerfield wall scoring Kailyn Johnson (Yorba Linda, Calif.). Shannon Hutchinson (Sewell, N.J.) and Cassidy Bell (Bakersfield, Calif.) laced back-to-back singles to score Rachel Myers (Millheim, Pa.) for a 2-0 lead. Alyssa Renwick (Laurens, S.C.) then drew a bases loaded walk to make it 3-0.

Marissa Diescher (Livingston Manor, N.Y.) got the start and threw three innings of one-hit ball with three strikeouts. When the wintry mix of snow, rain and graupel fell on Beard Field, the game was halted. After an hour of the Penn State grounds crew working to make the field playable, the umpires deemed the field unsafe and called off the doubleheader. None of the stats from today's game counts.

Penn State concludes its home stand on Saturday with a doubleheader at 2:00 p.m. against Indiana.
