Track and Field Honored at SAAB Banquet

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Members of the Nittany Lion track and field and cross country teams were honored for their commitment in the classroom and the community at the annual Student Athlete Advisory Board (SAAB) Academic Achievement Banquet, Monday night at the Penn Stater. Among the award winners was senior Anna Muzio(Harrisburg, Pa.) was garnered the Student-Athlete "Above and Beyond" Award to recognize her endeavors on campus and in the community.

Muzio has been heavily involved on on-campus activities and community service over her Penn State career, and was also a member of the 2011 Homecoming Court. The senior is a graduate of the Athletic Director's Leadership Institute, and has been a volunteer with the Special Olympics, and a Penn State track and field camp counselor over the past several summers. Muzio, who serves as the SAAB vice president, is the second track and field athlete to earn the award in the last three years, as former Nittany Lion Bridget Franekearned the citation in 2010.

Seven Nittany Lion seniors were recognized for consistent academic achievement over their Penn State careers, including Muzio, Tanaya Lloyd (Philadelphia, Pa.), Kara Millhouse (Boiling Springs, Pa.), Amanda Palenchar (Bradenville, Pa.), Jocelyn Witmer (Lancaster, Pa.), Jane Swenson (Brandon, S.D.), Chris Cipro (Harmony, Pa.), Jason Pelletier (Benton, Ark.), and Dan Sandrowicz(Indiana, Pa.). The senior award recognizes student-athletes who have been four-year participants in their sport, and have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.

Also receiving distinction were several Nittany Lions who were inducted into "Spritus Leoninus," an athletic honor society which is intended to recognize student-athletes who represent the ideals of Penn State. Track and field team members who were recognized as members of the society were Muzio, Sandrowicz, and Lindsey Graybill(Macungie, Pa.).
